Martin M. Makgatlhe - Shareholder and the Chief Executive Officer
CEO - Mr Martin Makgatlhe has played a pivotal role in the Securities Market of Botswana. As head of Dealings at Stockbrokers Botswana (1989-96) he helped set up what was then the only stockbroking company in Botswana. Stockbrokers Botswana also managed the Botswana Stock Exchange with Martin as the 1st registered Motswana stockbroker.
In 1996 Makgatlhe moved across to Investec Asset Management (Botswana) as Portfolio Manager. Here he was responsible for, amongst other duties, the promotion of the concept of fund management. At this stage in Botswana’s finacial history this was a relatively new concept. Through Makgatlhe’s work several mandates where won from a number of Pension and Provident funds.
It was in 1998 when Makgatlhe was tasked with the establishment of Investec Securities. This was to become the second stockbroking firm in Botswana. Makgatlhe headed Investec Botswana as CEO steering it through its infancy to becoming a real contender in the securities market by the end of 1999. During 2000 Makgatlhe bought out Investec Securities, through an empowerment deal, and renamed the company Motswedi Securities. Today under the stewardship of Makgatlhe, Motswedi Securities is the leading stockbroking firm in Botswana. It remains Botswana’s only 100% citizen owned stockbroking firm and is considered the leading broker.
His leadership capabilities have not gone unnoticed in Botswana, as he has been requested to sit on numerous company boards. Included amongst them are the Botswana Stock Exchange and the Botswana Building Society and BotswanaPost of which he is currently Board Chairman.
Onkutule S. Makgatlhe - Shareholder and Executive Director
Mrs Makgatlhe has a natural flair of entrepreneurship and business having spent many years in a successful family business as Operations Manager. She holds a BSc. in Computer Information Systems and MSc in
Information Systems Management. As an IT expert, she has held positions such as Systems Manager at
various IT companies. Makgatlhe is a Motswana.
Rizwan K Desai - Non-executive Director
Mr.Rizwan Desai is a Senior Partner at Collins Newman & Co., Where he
heads up the firm's corporate and banking practice. He received his Bachelor
of Laws with Honours Degree and a Post - Graduate Diploma from the
University of Edinburgh and his master of Laws Degree from Harvard Law
School, Harvard University. Qualified to practice law in Scotland, England and
New York, Rizwan trained and worked in the mergers and acquisitions
department at Scotland's largest law firm for 6 years prior to returning to
Botswana in1999.
Rizwan is widely acknowledged as one of the leading corporate lawyers in
Botswana and acts for most of the blue chip corporations in the country.
In addition to his role as a non-executive director of Motswedi Securities
(Proprietary) Limited, Rizwan presently serves as Chairman of the Botswana
Stock Exchange and is a non-executive director of Barclays Bank of Botswana
Limited. He also has number of active business interests.
